Why does the Jersey Arts Trust give grants?

The Jersey Arts Trust is the Island’s development agency for the arts. We believe in the transforming power of the arts and their ability to change the lives of people throughout the Island.

We want the arts to be at the heart of Jersey life, reflecting the Island’s rich and diverse culture. We’re here to help people throughout the Island to experience artistic and multi-cultural activities of the highest quality.

Our grants are provided to help artistic and cultural activities which support our aims and those of Jersey’s artistic communities.

Who Can Apply?

Our grants are for individuals and organisations who are involved in the arts in either amateur of professional capacities. They are for activities that benefit people in Jersey or which help the people in the Island who use the arts in their day-to-day work.

We also provide the Olive Brown bursary. It’s aimed at assisting performing arts students, and can amount to £1,000 per year for up to three years. For more information click here.

How is the decision made?

All applications are immediately reviewed by the Arts Development Co-ordinators who check that all the required information is present. They may wish to speak to the applicant further or ask additional questions surrounding the project. Once satisfied they have all necessary information, the application is sent to the board of Trustees along with a recommendation as to what should be given.

The Trustees meet on a monthly basis where they will review the application, taking into account the recommendations of the Arts Development Co-ordinators and the assessment criteria as in the guidance notes. Normally a decision is made at the meeting but occasionally more information is required and it is deferred to a future meeting. The applicant will be informed of the outcome the following day and, if successful, will receive a funding contract that they need to sign before the money is released.

What’s on offer?

The total budget for grants in 2011 is £50,000, which spread evenly and fairly among a number of funding requests. Whilst we do not formally set a maximum figure for which people can apply, it is rare that we award more than £1,000 for an individual or more than £5,000 for an organisation.

For those wishing to apply for travel grants, the standard travel grant from the Jersey Arts Trust is £100 per person, though more will be considered in exceptional circumstances.
